FAXCOMEXLib – Microsoft Fax Server Version Support – Problems and Solutions

Problems experienced by developers attempting to create a fax service using FAXCOMEXLib are sometimes related to more basic problems with their Microsoft fax server version. In these cases, the client application attempting to connect to the fax server might not support the version of the server, or vice versa.

This page lists a few of the limitations when working with different Microsoft client/server versions, and specifies the supported servers/clients for each version.

Windows 2000 Personal Fax

As a client or server, the Windows 2000 Personal Fax:

• Can connect to a Windows 2000 Personal Fax, locally
• Cannot connect to a Windows XP Fax or a Windows Server 2003 Fax

Windows 2000 Server

As a client or server, the Windows 2000 Server:

• Can connect to a Windows 2000 Personal Fax, locally
• Cannot connect to a Windows XP Fax or a Windows Server 2003 Fax

Windows XP Fax

As a client or server, the Windows XP Fax:

• Can connect to:
  • A Windows Server 2003 Fax
  • A Windows XP Fax, only to submit new faxes locally
• Cannot connect to a Windows 2000 Personal Fax

Windows Server 2003 Fax

As a client or server, the Windows Server 2003 Fax:

• Can connect to a Windows XP Fax or a Windows Server 2003 Fax
• Cannot connect to a Windows XP Fax

Additional Issues with Windows 2003 Server:

• When submitting faxes remotely to a Windows 2003 server, there must be a fax printer connected to this server
• When remotely connecting to a Windows 2003 fax printer, it must be a shared printer
